US upland cotton and American Pima cotton are representative of the cotton grown in the United States. According to data provided by the US Department of Agriculture, in 2017, US upland cotton production reached 96.7% of total cotton production, while Pima cotton was grown mainly in Georgia and Arizona in the United States. It is characterized by soft touch and superior toughness.

In the Central Valley of California, a widely cultivated, representative cotton variety in the state has become the target of trade warfare, and it is the acclaimed long-fiber American Pima cotton. This kind of flexible cotton is exported to China and India every year.

According to Jalal Nieber, president of California Cotton Cooperatives Co., Ltd., in 2016, only one state in California exported cotton worth 88.5 million US dollars (about 586 million yuan) to mainland China and Hong Kong. In the 2017-2018 planting year, due to the increase in shipping, the export value increased to 185 million US dollars (about 1.226 billion yuan).
